UNB Students return from 12 weeks at Mzuzu University, Malawi

Mzuzu University Summer Internships: 3 UNB Engineering students joined the faculty and staff at the Department of Land Management, Mzuzu University in Northern Malawi. Landon Urquhart (M.Sc.Eng) and Hershy Jani (B.Sc.Eng.) of the Department of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering taught Photogrammetry, an Introduction to Surveying and Hydrographic Surveying to 3rd and 4th year students. In addition they delivered the departments first ever “Survey Camp” with used equipment donated by the New Brunswick Department of Transportation and the City of Saint John. Jaime MacLellan, (M.Sc.Eng Environmental Studies) of the Department of Chemical Engineering focused on sustainable land management, climate change, and deforestation/forest degradation.

Kauma Village Youth and Children’s Centre Summer Internships: 2 UNB Kinesiology students and 1 Nursing student spent 94 days working with the KVYCC Executives on developing and delivering curriculum relating to health, childhood development and governance. Annie Ouellette (B.Nur) and Sarah Williamson (B.KIN) worked with community children and AIDS orphans between the ages of 5-12 on basic health programs, dental hygiene and poverty related diseases. A special focus was placed on raising self-esteem and building confidence in orphaned and vulnerable young girls. Ben Noseworthy (B.KIN) worked with KYVCC Executives on increasing community capacity, creating policy and implementing educational programs under their village governance structure.

With the assistance of the 2009 Students for Development Program (AUCC) and financial support from CIDA, UNB and its interns continued to strengthening the UNB/Malawi Internship Program. These students, working together with the program’s Malawian partners, helped to promote good governance, build community capacity, increase awareness on the importance of environmental sustainability and raise knowledge on health issues. During their 12 weeks in Malawi, the interns transformed from ordinary university students to true “Global Citizens.
